Geocities being shut down, spiritual successor in Myspace.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/04/24/geocities_bye/

One might think that because Geocities is shutting down, the era of teenagers making gaudy, amateurish, and plain old ugly webpages would be over and forgotten... But those who fail to learn from history or never studied it are doomed to repeat it. They've just all gone over to Myspace where it's not only easier to make gaudy webpages, but you can be even more amateurish while making webpages that look ever so slightly better, but still horribly ugly.

I suppose that you can never get rid of that stuff entirely though, so it is better to concentrate them in one location so that they are more easily avoided.

Amen. I flinch whenever I hover my cursor over a link and see that it goes to myspace.

I'm sort of sorry Geocities is going away, though I don't think I've been to a Geocities page in ... well, like a decade or so. Well, maybe a couple; there are still a few obscure hobbyist pages on there that have been sitting there forgotten since 1996.

I wonder how hard it would be to archive all of the remaining sites off geocities? Maybe the webarchive site has already done this.

I think I briefly had a page on there between the time I was on ITI2 and I moved my page to my college.

My webpage on ITI2, the College, and Geocities was definitely ugly and amateurish, but I tried really hard to avoid gaudy. :)

The reason MySpace pages are much more ugly is that you get far more options for backgrounds, and they forgot the tutorial on "How Not To Clash Colours" - either that, or it's more of a "How To Clash Colours"

Yep. Basically, giving people the power to do something before they are able to understand the consequences of that power.

I'm all for giving people the ability to do things, but I prefer it to happen once they understand what they're doing, thus putting the power in a place where you need to understand how it works in order to use that power...

This would be like a linux system where you can get root access once you understand the sudo command, compared to the pre-OSX macs where you had little power to do anything even once you did understand how to use it responsibly.
